Beats Per Minute (BPM) – The Origins of a Trance Legacy
Beats Per Minute (BPM) was a pioneering dance music radio show created and hosted by DJ Skott in 1997 on WHSN 89.3 FM in Bangor, Maine. Airing Friday nights—8 PM to midnight during summers and 9 PM to midnight during school sessions—BPM delivered an eclectic blend of Hi-NRG, Eurodance, Speed Garage, House, Top 40 club remixes, and early Trance to the Maine airwaves.
When BPM launched, DJ Skott was mixing without pitch control, resulting in a raw, experimental style. Transitions ranged from hard slams to creative blends, capturing the energy of club culture on a college radio format. In April 1998, DJ Skott upgraded his gear to Numark CD-7030s, which marked a major turning point in the show’s sound and technical precision.
The original run of BPM on WHSN concluded in January 1999, but the spirit of the show lived on.
In 2001, DJ Skott launched The BPM Radio Network—an early streaming project dedicated to trance music and underground club sounds. Though short-lived at first, he revived the concept in 2006 as a full-time internet radio station, which remained online until April 2012. The station became a haven for trance lovers around the world, broadcasting DJ Skott’s signature sets along with curated programming.
Although the BPM Radio Network is no longer active, this page serves as an archive—preserving mixes from the original WHSN broadcasts and live sessions from the BPM Radio Network era. It’s a tribute to the roots of DJ Skott’s journey and the legacy of BPM as one of the earliest dedicated dance music platforms in the region.
